Practical Information for Planning Your Botswana Safari

Botswana is a year-round destination, but each season offers something uniquely special. Whether you’re drawn by the classic big game experience or the serenity of bird-filled lagoons, the timing of your safari can enhance your adventure.

Best Time to Visit Botswana

May to October – The Dry Season (Peak Safari Period)

This is the most popular time to visit Botswana and ideal for first-time safari travellers and wildlife enthusiasts.

  • Game viewing is exceptional – As water becomes scarce, wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources like the Okavango Delta and Chobe River.
  • Clear, sunny days and cool nights – Expect daytime temperatures of 25–30°C and cool evenings (down to 5°C in the Kalahari).
  • Minimal vegetation – Making it easier to spot predators and large mammals.
  • Excellent for photography – Bright light, dramatic skies, and high wildlife activity.

Note: Peak lodge rates and higher demand during this period—early booking is recommended.

November to April – The Green Season (Low Season or Emerald Season)

This is Botswana’s rainy season, marked by dramatic beauty, verdant landscapes, and fewer visitors.

  • Lush and green scenery – Transforms the landscape into a photographer’s dream.
  • Ideal for birdwatching – Over 500 bird species, with many migrants arriving.
  • Newborn wildlife sightings – Antelope calving season attracts predators, offering thrilling game viewing.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms – Brief but spectacular; mornings are usually clear.
  • Fewer tourists and excellent value – Luxury lodges often offer reduced rates and availability is more flexible.

Tip: This season is particularly magical in the Central Kalahari, Nxai Pan, and Makgadikgadi Pans, where migratory species return and the desert blooms with life.

What to Pack

For the best comfort and preparation, consider packing the following essentials:

  • Lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing (avoid white and bright colours)
  • A warm fleece or jacket for chilly mornings
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunblock
  • Binoculars and a camera with zoom lens
  • Personal toiletries and any medication
  • Waterproof bag for camera gear during mokoro or boat activities

We will provide a full packing checklist tailored to your itinerary.

Supporting Communities and Conservation

We believe that travel is more than just an escape into nature – it is a chance to give back, to conserve, and to empower. Every journey we design carries a deeper purpose: protecting the wild places we cherish while uplifting the people who call them home.

A Safari That Gives Back

When you travel with Pride Plains, your safari does not only create memories for you – it creates opportunities for others. From conservation projects to community initiatives, we ensure that your presence leaves behind a meaningful and lasting impact.

Okavango World Festival

Pride Plains proudly hosts Okavango World Festival, a celebration of Botswana’s vibrant culture, music, food, and art. Each September, the Panhandle becomes a stage for creativity and unity, bringing together travellers and communities. The festival is more than entertainment – it is a platform that supports:

  • Schools – providing resources and opportunities for local children.
  • Small Businesses – offering local entrepreneurs the chance to showcase their craft and grow their reach.
  • Cultural Traditions – ensuring Botswana’s music, dance, and storytelling thrive for generations to come.

By joining this festival, guests become part of a movement that preserves heritage while fuelling development.

EcoLife Trust

We also work hand-in-hand with EcoLife Trust, a Botswana-based non-profit dedicated to conservation and community care. Through this partnership, each safari helps fund initiatives such as:

  • Anti-Poaching Efforts – protecting endangered species from the threats of illegal hunting.
  • Wildlife Conservation – ensuring elephants, lions, and wild dogs continue to roam freely in their natural habitats.
  • Habitat Restoration – safeguarding ecosystems that sustain both wildlife and communities.
  • Community Empowerment – creating opportunities in education, employment, and sustainable livelihoods for local people.

Your safari investment directly contributes to these efforts, making every journey part of a much larger story of protection and renewal.
